Is the club really about working 40 hours?

Nope–but the “Choose Your Own Target Number That’s Realistic for Your Teaching Context and Adjust It Each Week for the Current Demands on Your Time Club” didn’t have quite the same ring to it!

40 is the number of contractual hours many educators are required to work (and it was MY target number as a classroom teacher.) The number 40 is designed to take you aback and get you thinking:

Wait, 40? Is that even possible? How many hours do I actually work? I wonder how many I COULD work, if I was more intentional and strategic with my time?

As a member, you’ll be encouraged to start by trimming 3-5 hours off your current workweek, and slowly lower that number throughout your year in the club.

The real goal of the club is to get organized, streamline routines, give kids ownership of the classroom, and be truly intentional about how you use your instructional, contractual, and personal time...and through that process, you’ll trim 3,5, or even 10+ hours off your workweek.

Who is the club designed to help?

The club resources are targeted toward general education K-12 teachers in the United States. The materials are ideal for 1st-8th grade teachers, and we have successful club members teaching everything from kindergarten through high school.

Around 55% of members are elementary and 40% are middle/high school teachers. The vast majority teach in self-contained settings, though we do have some special educators and specialists (music, art, foreign language, technology, etc.)

About 10% of our members teach internationally (primarily in Canada and Australia, followed by Europe.)

The materials are not tied to a specific curriculum or set of standards, and are designed to be applicable to your work throughout your career, no matter what grade level or subject area you teach. This is about YOU, your habits, and your mindset, not what you teach!

How can I get support in making the strategies for work me?

The Facebook community will help you keep up and adapt the club strategies for YOUR unique teaching context. As a club member (and even after your year is up!), you’ll have 24/7 access to a private Facebook group for elementary or secondary educators where you can ask questions, discuss time-saving strategies that have worked for you, and get advice from other teachers.

I personally check into the group on regular basis to answer questions and facilitate discussions, and my co-moderators (who are classroom teachers and graduates of the club) ensure that every question receives helpful responses.

Participation in the Facebook group is entirely optional, but many club members view it as an integral part of their success. You’ll get the best results from the club by checking in to the group once or twice a week, and skimming through the posts to find encouragement, accountability, and productivity tips other members have discovered.

A big part of the 40HTW is being intentional with your time. It’s important to take a few minutes each weekend and make a to-list for the week ahead and plan your target number of hours to work. During this time, you’re encouraged to check out the new productivity strategies that were sent to you on Saturday morning and choose the ones you want to implement.

Of course, that’s an ideal scenario, and there will be weekends when you can’t do this. Good news: all the 40HTW content is right on your mobile device. So instead of scrolling absent-mindedly through social media posts while waiting for your doctor’s appointment to begin or for your kids’ soccer practice to end, you can be skimming over ideas that save you time in your membership library.

And, most of us check social media throughout the day as a little break–you can funnel that habit into something productive, and make the 40HTW Club on Facebook your go-to group. Just spending a few minutes scrolling through the posts there will give you insight as to how other teachers are managing the pressure to do it all.

All the club content is also provided in audio form, so you can listen while driving, exercising, cooking, cleaning, or doing any of your regular daily tasks. Many of our members stay current with the club content by listening each week on their commute to and from school.

Absolutely! Even though we have a defined focus each month, the club is entirely self-paced, and there’s really no such thing as “falling behind.” You can go back to access previous content in the membership site at ANY time, even after you graduate from the club. You even keep your access to the Facebook community so you always have a strong support network.

The club isn’t designed to be another obligation you have to keep up with–it’s a lifeline that supports you, and is there whenever you need it.

The club is about breaking free from traditional ways of teaching and learning that frankly don’t work well for kids OR teachers. If your instruction is paperless, differentiated, 1:1, mixed grade levels, project-based, or any other non-traditional format, the club will help support you with that.

No! Giving students stacks of worksheets each day would be one of the least efficient, effective ways to teach and in direct opposition to the purposes of the club.

Many of the printables are forms and templates designed for YOU to use (not your students) to help with data management, lesson planning, grading, etc.

The printables designed for students are things like classroom job resources, growth mindset activities, and activities to help you build a strong classroom culture. A variety of materials are provided so you can choose what works best for your students, and many are editable so you can easily adapt them.

Think about the confusion and disruption that occurs when a new student enters your class mid-year. It’s always better when a group of students begin at the same time and stick together until the year is over, and the same is true for the club!

A limited enrollment period creates a sense of community and allows members to join in cohorts so no one has to wander in alone and feel lost. When you join, you’ll have the support of other teachers who are progressing through each focus area in the same order as you, at the same time as you, so that you can share ideas and support one another.

Nope, there’s nothing impractical here. I don’t claim to have any miraculous solutions. I can’t eliminate lesson planning or make a stack of ungraded papers disappear. The 40HTW is about making a series of small changes to your life that add up to big results.

In one of the weekly PDFs you’ll receive, I’ll help you figure out ways to streamline a single daily routine and shave 15 minutes off your work day. The next week, I’ll suggest another set of practices that help you get a dreaded task done 5 minute quicker. The week after that, I’ll share some strategies for rethinking your approach to the next task, and you’ll be leaving school another 10 minutes earlier than you thought.

Since you’ll be focusing on just one area of time management per month, and one aspect of that area per week, you’ll be implementing just a few small, manageable changes at any given time. This sustainable pace, combined with the support of other innovative teachers who share how they’re adapting the ideas for their classrooms, will allow you to gradually develop a personalized system that shaves 3, 5, or even 10 hours off your workweek.

The 40HTW is not about shortchanging kids or refusing to follow district directives. None of your principal’s or state’s requirements need to be changed in order for you to benefit from this club. In fact, you’ll be better empowered to complete whatever is required of you as you learn to work more efficiently.

The club will challenge you to rethink commonly-held assumptions about what you “have to do” as a teacher. It’s a tough truth that you must be prepared to confront: sometimes we blame outside authorities for our workload when deeper reflection will reveal that the expectation is at least partly self-imposed, or the approach we’ve taken to complete the task is more stressful and time-consuming than it needs to be.

I can’t remove or lessen the demands that have been placed on you. But I CAN help you understand how the mindset, daily routines, and teaching practices you CHOOSE are continually making those demands easier or harder to meet. The goal is to help you figure out a personalized system for tackling those non-negotiable requirements in more effective, efficient, and enjoyable ways. It absolutely can be done, and you’ll have lots of support as you figure out how.

Well, you’re certainly welcome to try! However, judging from the number of stressed out and exhausted teachers I know, it seems that work/life balance isn’t usually as simple as getting a few tips from veteran teachers. It’s also not very efficient to continually spend hours cobbling together random free stuff from various websites.

The best comparison I can give is this: Tons of people successfully lose weight without following a specific diet program or joining a gym. But many other people find it’s a lot easier when they follow a proven system that’s already been figured out for them. They also realize they get better results when they have support and accountability.
